Bio

Ainhoa Akutain combines her artistic practice with teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Basque Country/EHU. She is also a member of the research group KREAREak_Creation in Art and Applied Aesthetics for the City, the Landscape, and the Community. She got a Ph.D. Research Fellowship to carry out her Doctoral Thesis Détournement: a possible reality from artistic praxis (Summa Cum Laude, 2017) and on several occasions the Grant for Art Creation-Production or Grant for Art Promotion-Dissemination, both from the Basque Government. She has also received the Production Grant from the Provincial Council of Biscay. Likewise, she has been a beneficiary of Art Promotion Grants from the Etxepare Basque Institute and awards such as the Grand Prix de la Découvert, EAC Uruguay, Arte Laguna Prize, Stockholm Fringe Festival, International IPA or Premis ArtsFad a la Creació Artística, among others. Akutain has exhibited at internationally recognized art museums and exhibition centers, including the Arsenale in Venice, Contemporary Art Space of Montevideo, Angel Orensanz Foundation of New York, Asia House of London, Art Basel Miami, CICA Museum of Gimpo-si in Korea, Peckham International Art Fair, Kulturhuset of Stockholm or in Spanish centers such as Montehermoso Cultural Center of Vitoria-Gasteiz, BilbaoArte Foundation or Disseny Hub in Barcelona.

Akutain´s work is nourished by the resources she finds in each place and in the uniqueness of the context -as a fictional construct of territory-, which acquires the meaning through a process guided by a commitment to the specificity of the sculpture, understood in its expanded sense.

Akutain incorporates sculpture, photography, and textual or graphic works in her projects, paying attention to the distance always interposed between language, sign, and social representations. This exercise allows her, among other things, to explore the interstices between the lived-in space and the constructed space as a relative experience, open to new readings, and recognize unity in diversity and diversity in unity.
